ISE Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Dynamics (Paperback, 12th edition): Ferdinand Beer, E Johnston, Phillip J. Cornwell, Brian... ISE Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Dynamics (Paperback, 12th edition)
Ferdinand Beer, E Johnston, Phillip J. Cornwell, Brian Self
R1,809 Discovery Miles 18 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A primary objective in a first course in mechanics is to help develop a student's ability first to analyze problems in a simple and logical manner, and then to apply basic principles to their solutions. A strong conceptual understanding of these basic mechanics principles is essential for successfully solving mechanics problems. This edition of Vector Mechanics for Engineers will help instructors achieve these goals. Continuing in the spirit of its successful previous editions, this edition provides conceptually accurate and thorough coverage together with a significant refreshment of the exercise sets and online delivery of homework problems to your students. The 12th edition has new case studies and enhancements in the text and in Connect. The hallmark of the Beer-Johnston series has been the problem sets. This edition is no different. Over 650 of the homework problems in the text are new or revised. One of the characteristics of the approach used in this book is that mechanics of particles is clearly separated from the mechanics of rigid bodies. This approach makes it possible to consider simple practical applications at an early stage and to postpone the introduction of the more difficult concepts. Additionally, Connect has over 100 Free-Body Diagram Tool Problems and Process-Oriented Problems. McGraw-Hill's Connect, is also available. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, how they need it, so that class time is more effective. Connect allows the professor to assign homework, quizzes, and tests easily and automatically grades and records the scores of the student's work. Problems are randomized to prevent sharing of answers an may also have a "multi-step solution" which helps move the students' learning along if they experience difficulty.

ISE Statics and Mechanics of Materials (Paperback, 3rd edition): Ferdinand Beer, E Johnston, John DeWolf, David Mazurek ISE Statics and Mechanics of Materials (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Ferdinand Beer, E Johnston, John DeWolf, David Mazurek
R1,801 Discovery Miles 18 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The approach of the Beer and Johnston series has been appreciated by hundreds of thousands of students over decades of engineering education. Maintaining the proven methodology and pedagogy of the Beer and Johnson series, Statics and Mechanics of Materials combines the theory and application behind these two subjects into one cohesive text focusing on teaching students to analyze problems in a simple and logical manner and, then, to use fundamental and well-understood principles in the solution. The addition of Case Studies based on real-world engineering problems provides students with an immediate application of the theory. A wealth of problems, Beer and Johnston's hallmark sample problems, and valuable review and summary sections at the end of each chapter, highlight the key pedagogy of the text.

The Power of Strategy Innovation - A New Way of Linking Creativity and Strategic Planning to Discover Great Business... The Power of Strategy Innovation - A New Way of Linking Creativity and Strategic Planning to Discover Great Business Opportunities (Paperback, Special ed.)
Robert E Johnston, J.Douglas Bate
R513 Discovery Miles 5 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on the authors Robert Johnson and Douglas Bate's thirty-two years of experience consulting to major organizations, The Power of Strategy Innovation contains tools and tricks to help companies excel in dynamic markets and provide groundbreaking products and services. You'll learn how to apply innovative thinking to your company's business model to bridge the gap between strategy and product development; how to remain flexible, future-oriented, and responsive to market changes and your clients' changing needs; and how to create a perpetual flow of viable new business opportunities. The authors refer to this as "innovation" rather than "strategic planning," but the truth is somewhere in-between: through a proven five-phase discovery process --for staging, aligning, exploring, creating, and mapping--strategic innovation will become a company-wide competency. The book's latest edition, updated in 2013, includes a new preface and epilogue describing the emergence of enterprise innovation and its impact on both companies' day-to-day planning and focuses on the future. Informative interviews with corporate leaders dispersed throughout the book provide further insight into different industries and the ways they have committed to taking a more innovative approach. To that end, through these shared methodologies, The Power of Strategy Innovation will forever transform the way you do business--and help you rise to become a leader in your industry.

Peg Aloi; Edited by Hannah E. Johnston
R4,438 Discovery Miles 44 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the shelves of mainstream bookstores and the pages of teen magazines, to popular films and television series, contemporary culture at the turn of the twenty-first century has been fascinated with teenage identity and the presence of magic and the occult. Alongside this profusion of products and representations, a global network of teenage Witches has emerged on the margins of adult neopagan Witchcraft communities, identifying themselves through various spiritual practices, consumption patterns and lifestyle choices. The New Generation Witches is the first published anthology to investigate the recent rise of the teenage Witchcraft phenomenon in both Britain and North America. Scholars from Theology, Cultural Studies, Sociology, History and Media Studies, along with neopagan commentators outside of the academy, come together to investigate the experiences of thousands of adolescents constructing an enabling, magical identity through a distinctive practice of Witchcraft. The contributors discuss key areas of interest, inspiration and development within the teen Witch communities from the mid 1990s onward, including teenage Witches' magical practices and beliefs, gender politics, the formation and identification of communities, forums and modes of expression, media representation and new media outlets. Demonstrating the diversification and expansion of neopaganism in the twenty-first century, this anthology makes an exciting contribution to the field of Neopagan Studies and contemporary youth cultures.

A Primer of Permutation Statistical Methods (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston, Paul W. Mielke Jr. A Primer of Permutation Statistical Methods (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston, Paul W. Mielke Jr.
R3,309 Discovery Miles 33 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The primary purpose of this textbook is to introduce the reader to a wide variety of elementary permutation statistical methods. Permutation methods are optimal for small data sets and non-random samples, and are free of distributional assumptions. The book follows the conventional structure of most introductory books on statistical methods, and features chapters on central tendency and variability, one-sample tests, two-sample tests, matched-pairs tests, one-way fully-randomized analysis of variance, one-way randomized-blocks analysis of variance, simple regression and correlation, and the analysis of contingency tables. In addition, it introduces and describes a comparatively new permutation-based, chance-corrected measure of effect size. Because permutation tests and measures are distribution-free, do not assume normality, and do not rely on squared deviations among sample values, they are currently being applied in a wide variety of disciplines. This book presents permutation alternatives to existing classical statistics, and is intended as a textbook for undergraduate statistics courses or graduate courses in the natural, social, and physical sciences, while assuming only an elementary grasp of statistics.

The British Commonwealth and Victory in the Second World War (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): Iain.... The British Commonwealth and Victory in the Second World War (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Iain. E Johnston-White
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the first comprehensive study of the British Commonwealth in the Second World War. Britain and its Dominions, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, formed the most durable, cooperative and interchangeable alliance of the war. Iain E. Johnston-White looks in depth at how the Commonwealth war effort was financed, the training of airmen for the air war, the problems of seaborne supply and the battles fought in North Africa. Fully one third of the 'British' effort originated in the Dominions, a contribution that was only possible through the symbiotic relationship that Britain maintained with its former settler-colonies. This cooperation was based upon a mutual self-interest that was largely maintained throughout the war. In this book, Johnston-White offers a fundamental reorientation in our understanding of British grand strategy in the Second World War.

The Measurement of Association - A Permutation Statistical Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E.... The Measurement of Association - A Permutation Statistical Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston, Paul W. Mielke Jr.
R4,635 Discovery Miles 46 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This research monograph utilizes exact and Monte Carlo permutation statistical methods to generate probability values and measures of effect size for a variety of measures of association. Association is broadly defined to include measures of correlation for two interval-level variables, measures of association for two nominal-level variables or two ordinal-level variables, and measures of agreement for two nominal-level or two ordinal-level variables. Additionally, measures of association for mixtures of the three levels of measurement are considered: nominal-ordinal, nominal-interval, and ordinal-interval measures. Numerous comparisons of permutation and classical statistical methods are presented. Unlike classical statistical methods, permutation statistical methods do not rely on theoretical distributions, avoid the usual assumptions of normality and homogeneity of variance, and depend only on the data at hand. This book takes a unique approach to explaining statistics by integrating a large variety of statistical methods, and establishing the rigor of a topic that to many may seem to be a nascent field. This topic is relatively new in that it took modern computing power to make permutation methods available to those working in mainstream research. Written for a statistically informed audience, it is particularly useful for teachers of statistics, practicing statisticians, applied statisticians, and quantitative graduate students in fields such as psychology, medical research, epidemiology, public health, and biology. It can also serve as a textbook in graduate courses in subjects like statistics, psychology, and biology.

A Chronicle of Permutation Statistical Methods - 1920-2000, and Beyond (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E.... A Chronicle of Permutation Statistical Methods - 1920-2000, and Beyond (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston, Paul W. Mielke Jr.
R3,066 Discovery Miles 30 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The focus of this book is on the birth and historical development of permutation statistical methods from the early 1920s to the near present. Beginning with the seminal contributions of R.A. Fisher, E.J.G. Pitman, and others in the 1920s and 1930s, permutation statistical methods were initially introduced to validate the assumptions of classical statistical methods. Permutation methods have advantages over classical methods in that they are optimal for small data sets and non-random samples, are data-dependent, and are free of distributional assumptions. Permutation probability values may be exact, or estimated via moment- or resampling-approximation procedures. Because permutation methods are inherently computationally-intensive, the evolution of computers and computing technology that made modern permutation methods possible accompanies the historical narrative. Permutation analogs of many well-known statistical tests are presented in a historical context, including multiple correlation and regression, analysis of variance, contingency table analysis, and measures of association and agreement. A non-mathematical approach makes the text accessible to readers of all levels.

Applying Benford's Law for Assessing the Validity of Social Science Data: Michael A Long, Paul B. Stretesky, Kenneth J.... Applying Benford's Law for Assessing the Validity of Social Science Data
Michael A Long, Paul B. Stretesky, Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston, Michael J Lynch
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Benford's Law is a probability distribution for the likelihood of the leading digit in a set of numbers. This book seeks to improve and systematize the use of Benford's Law in the social sciences to assess the validity of self-reported data. The authors first introduce a new measure of conformity to the Benford distribution that is created using permutation statistical methods and employs the concept of statistical agreement. In a switch from a typical Benford application, this book moves away from using Benford's Law to test whether the data conform to the Benford distribution, to using it to draw conclusions about the validity of the data. The concept of 'Benford validity' is developed, which indicates whether a dataset is valid based on comparisons with the Benford distribution and, in relation to this, diagnostic procedure that assesses the impact of not having Benford validity on data analysis is devised.

Advances in Chemical Signals in Vertebrates (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): Robert E Johnston,... Advances in Chemical Signals in Vertebrates (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
Robert E Johnston, Dietland Muller-Schwarze, Peter W. Sorenson
R5,937 Discovery Miles 59 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The field of olfactory research and chemical communication is in the early stages of revolutionary change, and many aspects of this revolution are reflected in the chapters in this book. Thus, it should serve admirably as an up-to-date reference. First, a wide range of vertebrate groups and species are represented. Second, there are excellent reviews of specific topics and theoretical approaches to communication by odors, including chapters on signal specialization and evolution in mammals, the evolution of hormonal pheromones in fish, alarm pheromones in fish, chemical repellents, the chemical signals involved in endocrine responses in mice, and the controversy over human pheromones. Third, there are exciting new findings presented in numerous specific topic areas, such as the chemis try of pheromones in a wide range of species (salamanders to elephants), the chemistry of proteins that control the release of pheromones, the molecular biology and physiology of detection, coding and response to odor signals, the effects of experience on sensitivity to odors, the role of genes of the immune system in odor production and in human mate choice, the function and perception of scent over-marks, the recognition of individuals and kin by odors, the influence of odors on predator-prey interactions, and the use of odors to help control pests. This book is an offshoot of the Eighth International Symposium on Chemical Sig nals in Vertebrates, held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, July 20-25, 1997, hosted and organized by Bob Johnston.

Kenneth J. Berry, Kenneth L. Kvamme, Janis E. Johnston, Paul W. Mielke Jr.
R3,486 Discovery Miles 34 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book takes a unique approach to explaining permutation statistics by integrating permutation statistical methods with a wide range of classical statistical methods and associated R programs. It opens by comparing and contrasting two models of statistical inference: the classical population model espoused by J. Neyman and E.S. Pearson and the permutation model first introduced by R.A. Fisher and E.J.G. Pitman. Numerous comparisons of permutation and classical statistical methods are presented, supplemented with a variety of R scripts for ease of computation. The text follows the general outline of an introductory textbook in statistics with chapters on central tendency and variability, one-sample tests, two-sample tests, matched-pairs tests, completely-randomized analysis of variance, randomized-blocks analysis of variance, simple linear regression and correlation, and the analysis of goodness of fit and contingency. Unlike classical statistical methods, permutation statistical methods do not rely on theoretical distributions, avoid the usual assumptions of normality and homogeneity, depend only on the observed data, and do not require random sampling. The methods are relatively new in that it took modern computing power to make them available to those working in mainstream research. Designed for an audience with a limited statistical background, the book can easily serve as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate courses in statistics, psychology, economics, political science or biology. No statistical training beyond a first course in statistics is required, but some knowledge of, or some interest in, the R programming language is assumed.

Statistical Methods: Connections, Equivalencies, and Relationships (1st ed. 2023): Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston Statistical Methods: Connections, Equivalencies, and Relationships (1st ed. 2023)
Kenneth J. Berry, Janis E. Johnston
R4,838 Discovery Miles 48 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The primary purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to a wide variety of interesting and useful connections, relationships, and equivalencies between and among conventional and permutation statistical methods. There are approximately 320 statistical connections and relationships described in this book. For each connection or connections the tests are described, the connection is explained, and an example analysis illustrates both the tests and the connection(s). The emphasis is more on demonstrations than on proofs, so little mathematical expertise is assumed. While the book is intended as a stand-alone monograph, it can also be used as a supplement to a standard textbook such as might be used in a second- or third-term course in conventional statistical methods. Students, faculty, and researchers in the social, natural, or hard sciences will find an interesting collection of statistical connections and relationships - some well-known, some more obscure, and some presented here for the first time.
